The wonderful @whalefern posted this picture of cowbirds, visually calling one another “Bro” and I was inspired to write this, because birds and poetry are both wonderful and twisty and silly and fun:
The cowbirds wear aviators
And order hamburgers named after comedians.
They watch basketball in HD
and check in on WhatsApp.
They have so much spare time;
no nests to build,
no children to feed.
They are thinking about taking an easy A class,
and drinking yesterday’s soda
warm in the can
as they call out to their bros
who will soon cause the neighbors to grumble
under the roar of a riding mower
about those shiftless kids
with nothing better to do than carouse
and sing off key,
cares as light as feathers.
